type='text'>

so we realize that the lyrics in the artwork of our new record are very hard to read. this was intentional. however, we feel now that we'd like for those people who are curious enough to look for them to be able to find them somewhere. plus, a decent chunk wound up online already, so I figure we might as well go ahead and put the rest of them up. we would also like for people to be able to get what we're trying to say with this record, because it has a lot to do with our feelings towards the category that our band has been placed in. thank you for being interested, if you are.

lionized
you've been plagued by repetition
you've been plagued by feigned emotion
(etc)

dime and this
glittering neon sea
standing still for the first 'theres no meaning there'
as if I'd never searched on solid ground
and found nothing more than
the firm adherence to an old belief
that the air By which I mean I got quite drunk with the dastardly Bill Bressin one night after practice and gave him the password. It was a good joke at first, but one that has unfortunately gone too far. I hope that the goings-on of our house in Harrisonburg will still be documented on the internet, as Bressin is a talented writer, and very funny, it just needs to happen on its own webspace. This space is reserved for the occasional band updates for which Twitter does not provide enough room and occasional rants from yours truly. And now, for some more of that.

We are extremely busy right now, but a lot is up in the air and we don't want to announce anything until we're completely sure that its going to happen. Suffice to say, we are writing new music. A lot of it. And, we're writing in a live environment for the first time, which is very exciting. We've already started breaking some of these new songs in live, and theres a good chance they'll keep changing and developing from show to show. We're working to make sure that this music gets released in 2010, and we'll post updates as they become available.

We're also working hard to make sure that we're on the road more in 2010 than ever before. We'll be out for a little bit in the spring, for longer in the summer, and then hopefully again in the fall/winter. The big question right now is "where?" We'll be doing a full U.S again at some time during the year, and we've also got our eye on the other side of the Atlantic. We're also looking to play more one off shows, so keep an eye out.

So, if you might be interested in helping us book or playing a show (or shows) with us, either in the US or Europe, now is the perfect time to get in touch! Myspace works, but Gmail is better- giftsfromenola@gmail.com.

Thanks!

current listening:
-neil young
-the six parts seven

went a whole 'nother tour without a single blog. so what, want to fight about it? I'm pretty sure this is just one more way for me to talk to myself anyways. so lets recap.

tour was good, mostly. except for the torturous amount of gear failure during our time with our brothers in irepress. perseverance. a continued education in what it means to perform. crash course in diesel/vegetable oil mechanics. lots of sweat and truck stops. there were dozens of dying beautiful moths and butterflies at one gas station in the middle of the night. there was a roadrunner that confronted cj and I in the desert. there were chickens thrown in portland. much of it feels unreal, but my beard, bank statements, and back pains remind me of the truth: I lived on a schoolbus for 9 weeks with five dudes. weird, right?

now were back at home, if you can call it that. we returned to harrisonburg, had a few harrisonburg (read: drunk) nights and then some returned to school and the others to the "real world." for the first time in this bands history we are scattered across the state. its different. more importantly, we are writing music and do not plan on taking such a long time to release some of it this time. we are making plans. we are thinking about music differently. we will be playing shows this fall and winter. we will play new things. that being said, after four-ish (? jesus) years of constantly writing, recording, booking, touring, or some combination of the above, this feels like a standstill. one of my best friends told me the other day that she was able to remember what the word "ennui" meant while studying for her GREs by thinking about my life outlook right now. bummer.

you know, when we started doing this people used to come up to us in bars and ask us "man how come yall guys dont have a singer?" and now people on message boards talk about how dissapointing it is that we "went vocal," about how it ruins it for them. the more we hear what we do being called "post-rock," the more determined we are to be anything but. in such a short period of time we have watched what we knew would happen, what happens to every "new" musical subgenre. I'm afraid that one of these days "post-rock" is going to be something like metalcore is right now.

played out, overpopulated, soulless, all out of ideas, all out of ideals. rotting.

its already happening, the wound has been inflicted. theres no stopping it, of course, it has to happen. forests have to burn in order for new ones to grow. in order for us to breathe. on a sinking ship, captains die. rats thrive. david bazans new record is very good, and I think hed be picking up what Im putting down here:

You used to feel like a smoker, shivering in the cold
Waiting outside the bar 'til the opener's over
But now you feel like a drinker, 20 days off the sauce
Down at the liquor store, trying to call your sponsor

You used to feel like the forrest fire burning
But now you feel like a child, throwing tantrums for your turn

You used to sound like a prophet, and everyone wanted to know
How you could tell the truth without losing that soft glow
But now you feel like a salesman, closing another deal
Or some drunk ship captain, raging after the white whale

You used to feel like the forrest fire burning
But now you feel like a child, throwing tantrums and then some
You used to feel like the prodigal returning
But now, now you hate what you made, and you want to watch it burn

that songs called "lost my shape."

this used to be a wide open field, a way of shedding the most basic restriction there was in the american idol frontman fetish culture. funny how things change.

rats took out something like a hundred million civilized human beings back in the day. back when that was over a quarter of the planet.

there are temples elsewhere in the world where rats are fed by holy men, and food that they've touched is considered to be blessed. perspective is a crazy thing.

-nate

cruch time

besides fear, stress is the best motivator. coffee helps too.

less than two weeks til tour and so much on our plates:

buswork. still got plenty to do, but the filter/ pump setup is up and running and smelling like french fries.<img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; it felt straaange. what do you do after that happens? i usually feel pretty positive about the shows we put on, but sometimes you get a little curveball thrown at ya. a musical wrench in the spokes of sorts. eww i hate cliches. but dont you worry; a big, tough ass Van-Damme-looking mechanic is going to come grab that slimy, cliche wrench from the spokes and break it with his teeth.
what?
i dont know dude.
i've been up for far too long. but what i think i'm trying to say is that van-damme is the man, but dolph lundgren could take him any day.
...and that sometimes you just gotta realize all shows aren't going to run as smoothly as you hope. a positive is that i can't wait to play again, so that we can do things properly and have as much as fun as we always strive for.
BUTBUTBUT
first order of business is finally completing the mixing of the new album. we're soooo close. so close that it's almost a tease. we've had to put it on the backburner for the past 2 weeks though. it's the end of the semester here at 'ol james madison university, and exams, papers, etc. are all up on us like bill mckinney in deliverance. that said, starting this friday we'll being finishing it up, and hope to have it sent off for mastering by next friday. it's about an hour long. 8 songs. you can dance, ponder, sleep, headbang, eat pizza to it, plus much more. what i'm getting at is that there is a lot going on throughout the album. lots of stylistic variety and texture. however, i feel that with all the variety included on it, it is still by far the most cohesive thing we've ever done. but that's for you to decide, right? once we get the mastered tracks back, we'll put up some clips (or maybe even full songs.)

blahblahblah, thats all i can think of for now... oh yeah! i almost forgot...two of our good friends have sweet albums coming out. everyone make sure to go over to www.myspace.com/bewareofsafety and check out "dogs" that is coming out on the spectactular Mylene Sheath. annnnd go to www.myspace.com/movingmountainsmusic to check out "foreword." we've been able to hear a lot of these songs from both bands in some form or another, and one things for sure: it's allll sick. like empire strikes back sick, or paul jones now 86 proof sick. pick up both of those albums.

take 'er easy!
-andrew

playlisttt:
tortoise- millions now living will never die
pinback- blue screen life
akimbo- elephantine
cave in- jupiter
thingy- to the innocent

watchlist:
anthony bordain
8 1/2
thrice live at the house of blues
and....
<img style="display:block; It contains a lot of masks and some more footage from the show with Joy Wants Eternity and Wanli:

I don't think that I really need to say that it was an incredible show. Both Wanli and Joy Wants Eternity are great bands in completely different ways and we completely love all of them as dudes and we really dug how it all came together. A big thanks to everyone who came out, hanged hard, and got really sweaty and gross with us. We love you all and can't wait to do it again.

Speaking of, the Andrew WK show in November is now 18+ to get in and 21+ to drink, which hopefully means that everyone who wants to come can get in legally. We really hate playing shows with age restrictions at all, but were doing our best to make this work for everyone. It's going to be our biggest Harrisonburg show yet, and probably this towns most ridiculous one in a while and for some time to come, so make sure to be there. Get up with us for information about tickets or check out: http://www.blameitonthetrain.org/

And we will party hard.

On a completely different note, Temporary Residence will be releasing a split record featuring Thursday and Envy soon. It has already leaked to the interweb. I believe that its both great musically and of great importance because it shows Thursday doing what they really want to do and not what Victory Records wants. Why? Because they're no longer on that label. Because fuck big labels, mass distribution and advertising and a tour bus are not worth the vitality and honesty of that which you pour your soul into.

Thursday, along most notably with Thrice, with whom they released a split back when we were in high school or something, are both carrying the torch for this, the post-screamo generation who is fed up with empty screamed cliches and begs for something more. By eschewing the major label rockstar in favor of the artist who maintains his integrity they have both produced something positive and meaningful for listeners, giving something back to those who have afforded them a life where they can survive by making music.

Or at least that's how I see it.

There are those who care about you by virtue of the fact that you are a human being, that you are conscious, that you ARE. They create what they create so that you may find meaning in it greater than that which they could ever conceive, so that you may move forward, upward, in any direction so long as it feels like progress to you, and they do so lovingly. They create ART.

And there are those who care about you as a member of a target market, a demographic, a statistic, something to sell to. They know what you like and "write" "music" so that you will buy it or pay some absurd amount of money to watch them lie to you live and in person. So that you will pay another absurd amount of money for a shitty t-shirt that you wont even wear in a few years because you will be embarrassed to have ever liked the band. Future generations will remember them as we look back on hair metal of the 80's: as an example of the ridiculous heights of style at a given time, as an example of how stupid people will act all caught up in the movements of the mob mentality that dictates what is "cool."

They will be mocked on VH1 (or whatever channel takes its place) by relevant comedians of the time.

And these ones, they will wonder what the fuck they were thinking as they transition from rehab into a career in washed up celebrity reality television.

You can be more than a potential sale. You can get more out of music, out of movies, out of books, out of everything you perceive, than the television and the radio and mainstream print media will ever give you.

So download music. Rip it. Burn it. Whatever. With the internet as it is the debate has been raging as to whether or not music should be free or not, but it's ultimately an irrelevant argument. Whether it "should" be free or not, it IS, so listen to it. It may be a crime, but there's no such thing as a legal revolution.

The bands that care about you want you to hear their music, even if it means that they don't make any money off of it. If they bitch about downloading, take a second to think about what they really care about.

Find something you love online and support it by spreading the word or by seeing them live in a basement somewhere, buy merch and give them a place to stay, feed them, tell them you believe in what they're doing, hang out with them, anything. Support need not be merely monetary.

Current Reading-

The Problem With Music
Leaves of Grass
Self Reliance

Current Listening-

Refused- The Shape of Punk to Come
The Rise- Reclamation Process
Mr. Bungle- California
Pedro the Lion- Control

Ho_wlon//ghavey_oub//eenslee_pinga//tthebo_ttomo_fthes//ea?

So_arupth//rough_thed//epths_andswi//mupt_othes//tars

re_sur//face

So I went to Boston last weekend and it was pretty incredible. Brandon and I saw Sigur Ros and some friends from Caspian and Irepress and we heard some awesome accents. I also got some great books at a used bookstore in Allston for cheap because the woman seemed to like how excited I was about them.

The night before we left Andrew and I spent some serious time working on a song that was previously just going to be an interlude type of thing. We've been working on it for a long time and it really came together, like it grew up or something. It was an awkward teen of an interlude for so long but now its really come into its own and its very exciting. You can hear some of it in the most recent studio video:

<studio video="" 4=""><msprm name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/DD-mMKmazcc&hl=en&fs=1"><msprm name="allowFullScreen" value="true">

..</msprm>
</msprm></studio>

...but I'm not going to tell you which one it is.

In other news, we have some awesome shows coming up in Harrisonburg. This weekend well be playing with Joy Wants Eternity and Wanli at the Bangkok house and on November 20th well be playing at the Pub with Andrew WK. Not even kidding. Thats right, this guy:

Get pumped, because I dont think anything like this will ever happen again.

We have some more exciting news about the new record, but were going to keep it to ourselves for a bit. word? word.

nate

listening-
United Nations- United Nations
Neurosis- A Sun That Never Sets
Jimmy Eat World- Futures
eating-
JIF extra crunchy peanut butter
reading-
Jack Kerouac- Book of Blues
William Everson- Dionysus and the Beat Generation

So we've posted another little moviefilmtype thing for you folks in which you can get a glimpse in to the harrowing and entirely serious universe of our recording process. What do you do when you don't have no gert'damn mallets and you want a cymbal roll and it sounds shitty when you do it with your hands because you really have no idea what you're doing? you put some socks on some sticks dummy! for your recording technology!

<msprm name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/hS5eJLV7KKI&hl=en&fs=1"><msprm name="allowFullScreen" value="true">

</msprm>

(sock-sticks patent pending)
</msprm>
All jokes aside, though, the songs really are coming along and we are enjoying being able to use more than the two microphones we've recorded everything else with and being able to record and mix without constant fear of a total system meltdown. its nice.

We still have a lot to do, retracking and adding new instruments and all, before we really settle down to mix this beast once and for all, but we're definitely on the home stretch, approaching the third trimester. I feel like we've been pregnant with this 8 (9?) headed child for so long that people have started to think that were just faking it in order to get attention and maybe a little child support and time off work. but its not true I say! we have the ultrasounds right here! hes just been in there for a bit too long and now hes clawing at the walls and hes going to come out fully grown and probably looking something like Steven Seagal with a rooster on his back.

Annnnnnnnnd thats all folks, more next week and maybe even more than that.

-Nate

play/reading list:
Intronaut- Prehistoricisms
My America is Watching Tigers Die- Stone Age
Electric Wizard- Dopethrone
A Day In Black and White- My Heroes Have Always Killed Cowboys
The Good Life- Album of the Year
Weezer- Pinkerton

Beat: Down To Your Soul- Ed. I guess we were just too damned busy doing things to find a portal to the internet and tell you about them, whoever you are. We might post some stories retroactively, but for the most part this blog will now focus on the recording process of our new full length, seeing as how we will be sitting at computers in a confined space anyways.

What to say about this new album. Well, its going to be the first thing we release that will actually have seen an actual recording studio and not just my laptop, which is very exciting. Andrew made a little short film to mark the beginning of this process:

We do not have a name yet, or at least one that we are one hundred percent set on, but we have had the music done for quite some time now. And by done, I mean mostly written and planned out. We played all but two of them this summer, and you can find some videos of them on the youtube as well. for those of you too lazy to go look, heres a little preview from our show with moving mountains, burbis, and overseas in beautiful washington pennsylvania shot by our main man Brandon Marcey:

And that's quite enough of that. In other news, school is back in session, which means we will not be playing out all that often for the next couple months at least. Bummer. That just means that were going to make the most of what shows we do play, and right now the only one we have scheduled is going to be nuts. Well be playing the Bangcock house again, right next to Taste of Thai on High St. in Harrisonburg, with Seattle's amazing Joy Wants Eternity and likely another band to be announced. Its going to rule, so come out. Be blinded by Wade's new lights and have a beverage or a several dozen. It'll be like that movie that just came out called "college" except real and way fucking sweeter.

I've rambled on for far too long, so I leave you some words that I've been thinking about quite a bit lately:

You are not thrown to the winds—you gather certainly and safely around yourself;
Yourself! Yourself! Yourself, forever and ever!
-Whitman

Think about it, or about anything. Just think.
-Nate

hello newwman

bob loblaw's law blog. we have a blog now. we're getting ready to go on tour for about 7 weeks and want to try and update this thing daily. we'll definitely put up some pictures, and maybe some video? we're gonna be practicing at jordan's place in charlottesville for the next 4 days. we hope relearn some old jams we haven't played for awhile or ever. we'll also be playing a bunch of songs from the upcoming full length album. most importantly, jordan's parents always make us the most glorious food ever.
yesterday was sobo day at the bag in harrisonburg. it was me, cj, and nate's first sobo day experience. it goes something like this:

you had to be there....or at least driven by to see a bunch of raging shirtless dudes with bandanas yelling at you.

im watching america's funniest home videos and it makes me miss bob saget. this new host is busch league. hopefully this will be more informative once things start rolling. check them tour dates at www.myspace.com/giftsfromenola

-andrew

playlist:
pele- the nudes
doomriders- black thunder
delft- moose.indian
